The shade question is almost always asked and answered wrongly. Someone asks “what's the best shade for a patio?”, the internet replies “a pergola,” and six weeks later they are sitting under an open-rafter pergola at five in the afternoon with the sun coming in horizontally underneath it, wondering what went wrong.

Nothing went wrong with the pergola. It was the wrong tool for a west-facing patio. Open rafters shade a high midday sun beautifully and do almost nothing about a low one. If your problem is 4pm in July, you need something that blocks a low angle — an awning, a tilting cantilever umbrella, or a canopy you can pull across — and the answer changes again if the site is windy, or you rent, or the area is 400 square feet rather than 100.

Sun direction decides more than budget

A high sun is easy to block: almost anything overhead works. A low sun is hard, because the light arrives nearly horizontally and goes under anything flat.

West-facing spaces have the worst version of this, because low afternoon sun coincides with the hottest part of the day and with the hours people actually want to sit outside. If your patio faces west, prioritise anything that tilts, extends, or drops a vertical panel — and be sceptical of any fixed horizontal structure, however good it looks.

East-facing spaces have the same geometry in the morning, which bothers fewer people. South-facing spaces get high midday sun, where overhead structures work well. North-facing spaces in the northern hemisphere get very little direct sun at all: before spending anything, sit out there at 2pm on a hot day, because the problem may be glare from a light-coloured wall or heat radiating off paving, and shade won't fix either.

Wind is what actually destroys shade

Fabric shade fails in wind, not in sun. A shade sail is a wing: it generates real lift, and the loads it puts into its anchor points in a gust are far higher than people expect. Umbrellas blow over, and a cantilever umbrella with an under-weighted base is heavy enough to injure someone.

If your site is exposed, either commit to a rigid structure or commit to taking the fabric down. The middle path — a sail left up all season on an exposed site — is how sails end up torn, anchors end up pulled out of fascia boards, and umbrellas end up in the neighbour's garden.

Base weights are not optional. A cantilever umbrella needs 150–250 lb of base. That is four to six concrete slabs, and it is why the good bases cost almost as much as the umbrella.

The one option that gets better every year

A tree is the only shade solution here that improves with time, costs almost nothing to run, and actively cools the air rather than merely blocking light — a mature shade tree moves hundreds of litres of water a day, and that evaporative cooling is why the air under a tree is genuinely cooler than the air under a sail.

The catch is obvious: it takes five to ten years to shade anything meaningfully. The honest answer for most people is both — plant the tree now for the decade after next, and put up something temporary for this summer. Site it carefully. Roots and hard surfaces are a slow-motion conflict, and a tree planted too close to a patio will eventually lift it. Check the mature canopy width, not the pot size, and plant at least that radius away from anything you don't want disturbed.

Buying shade for midday when your problem is 5pm

Overhead structures block high sun. Low afternoon sun goes underneath them. Sit in the space at the hour that actually bothers you and note where the light is coming from before choosing anything.

Anchoring a shade sail to something that isn't structural

Fascia boards, fence panels, and gutter brackets are not anchor points. A sail in a gust can pull hundreds of pounds. Anchor to posts set in concrete or to structural framing, and nothing else.

Under-weighting an umbrella base

A cantilever umbrella needs 150–250 lb. The base bundled with a cheap umbrella is rarely enough, and an umbrella that has blown over once will do it again.

Building a pergola without checking setbacks

  • Shade sails generate significant uplift. Anchor posts need footings sized for uplift as well as weight — this is a case where following the manufacturer's specification matters.
  • Never leave an umbrella open and unattended, and close it when wind is forecast rather than when it arrives.
  • Anything that mounts to the house — awnings especially — puts real load into the wall structure. Mounting an awning into siding rather than framing is the most common failure, and it takes the siding with it.
