This closet can double hang

Count roughly — within five garments is close enough. The point is whether it fits, not the exact number.
Search for closet shelving layout and you will find the same set of numbers repeated across a dozen small blogs. Single rod at 66 inches. Double hang at 84 and 42. Twenty-four inches deep. Thirty-six to forty inches of hanging space for shirts, sixty to seventy for dresses. All correct, all useful, and all left as an exercise for the reader.
The gap is that none of them turns those numbers into a layout for a specific closet holding a specific wardrobe. The question people actually have is not what the standard rod height is — it is whether their clothes will fit in the space they have, and how to arrange it if they will.
That is a determinate problem. Given a closet's dimensions and a rough count of what goes in it, the arrangement follows: how much long hang, how much can be doubled, where the shelves land, and whether the total comes up short. This returns all of that as a drawing rather than a paragraph, because it is a spatial problem and a drawing is the honest way to communicate one.
The numbers everyone publishes, and what they are for
A single rod goes at 66 inches. That height leaves enough clearance beneath for a full-length dress or coat, and puts the rod within comfortable reach for most adults. It is the default for a closet holding a mixed wardrobe.
Double hanging puts an upper rod at 84 inches and a lower at 42, giving roughly 40 inches of hanging space for each. That suits shirts, blouses, jackets and trousers folded over a bar — anything that does not need full length. It roughly doubles capacity across the section it covers, and it is the single most effective change available in a small closet.
The constraint is ceiling height. Double hanging needs about 84 inches of usable height to work, because you need 40 inches of clear hang below the upper rod and another 40 below the lower. In a closet under that, a single rod with a generous shelf above is the correct arrangement, and the shelf is where the extra capacity comes from.
Depth matters more than people expect. A coat hanger is about 18 inches wide and sleeves project beyond that, so a closet shallower than 24 inches means clothes rub the door every time it closes. If the depth is fixed and inadequate, the answer is usually rods running front to back on a pull-out rather than side to side.

How much space a wardrobe actually takes
Closet design practice allows about two and a half inches of rod per long-hanging garment and one and a half per short-hanging one. Those figures assume normal hangers and a wardrobe you can move through comfortably rather than one compressed into the space.
Multiply that out and the results surprise people. Forty shirts need five feet of rod. Add ten dresses and coats and you need another two feet at full height. A six-foot reach-in closet with a single rod provides six feet of rod in total, which is why so many of them are visibly overstuffed.
The tool compares what your wardrobe needs against what the closet provides and reports the gap in inches. If it does not fit, there are only three honest responses: double hang more of the wall if the height allows, move folded items to drawers elsewhere, or reduce the wardrobe. Knowing which before you cut any shelving is the point.
One caution on utilisation. A closet running above about ninety per cent of its rod capacity is technically full and practically unusable — garments crush, nothing goes back easily, and you stop being able to see what you own. Aim for eighty per cent and leave room for the clothes you have not bought yet.
The top shelf is the free capacity nobody uses
Almost every closet has a full-width shelf above the rod, and almost every one is either empty or holding a single jumbled layer of things nobody can identify.
It is the cheapest capacity in the entire closet. A shelf board and three cleats cost very little, and a full-width top shelf in a six-foot closet holds roughly forty folded items or six storage boxes. In a closet that is otherwise short of space, adding or properly using this shelf is the highest-return change available.
The trick is containers. Loose items on a high shelf become inaccessible almost immediately because you cannot see them and cannot reach them without a stool. Matching boxes with labels on the front edge turn the same shelf into genuinely usable storage, and they are what makes seasonal rotation practical.
- Support any rod every 36 inches. A six-foot span loaded with winter coats bows visibly and eventually drops.
- Shelves need cleats on the back and both sides, screwed into studs wherever possible. Drywall anchors alone will not hold a loaded shelf.
- Cut shelf boards an eighth of an inch short of the opening. Closets are rarely square, and a tight-cut shelf will not go in.
- Angled shoe shelves at 8 inches vertical spacing hold considerably more than flat ones, and let you see the shoes.
Planning for limited reach
A standard closet puts its upper rod at 84 inches and its top shelf at 88. For a wheelchair user, or anyone with limited shoulder mobility, both are simply unreachable, and a closet where half the storage cannot be used is not accessible in any meaningful sense.
The accessible layout caps every element within seated reach: rods at 48 and 30 inches, top shelf at 54, accessory shelving at 42. That reduces total capacity, which is an honest trade rather than a hidden one — the tool shows the reduced figures rather than pretending the space is equivalent.
Pull-down rods are worth knowing about. They mount high and swing down within reach, which recovers some of the upper space for items used occasionally. They are not suitable for daily-use clothing, and they need a clear swing path, but for a seasonal wardrobe they work well.
Building it, and where the money goes
A site-built closet interior in three-quarter-inch plywood or melamine costs a fraction of a wire or modular system and holds considerably more weight. The materials for a typical six-foot reach-in come to under two hundred dollars, and the work is a weekend for someone comfortable with a circular saw.
Wire systems are cheaper still and quicker to fit, but they sag under load, small items fall through, and folded clothes come out with lines pressed into them. They suit a rental or a low-use closet.
Modular retail systems sit in between on cost and look better than wire, but they are sized to their own module rather than to your closet, which usually means dead space at one end. The advantage of building it is that it fits the opening you actually have.
Whatever route you take, the fixing matters more than the material. Shelves and rods carry real weight — a rod of winter coats is heavier than most people estimate — and everything should reach a stud wherever a stud can be reached.

Safety & honest limits
- Shelves and rods carry more weight than people estimate. Fix into studs wherever possible; drywall anchors alone are not adequate for a loaded shelf or a full rod.
- Check for wiring and pipes before driving fixings into a closet wall — closets frequently back onto bathrooms and service runs.
- Cut sheet materials outdoors or with extraction. MDF and melamine dust is a respiratory irritant.
- Anything stored above head height should be light. A heavy box on a high shelf is a genuine hazard when someone reaches for it.
