The material matters as much as the length

Rigid metal duct is the correct material for the concealed run, and it is not expensive. The bore is smooth, so lint travels through it rather than catching, and it cannot be crushed when the dryer is pushed back against the wall.

Flexible foil is the material most often found and it is a poor choice for anything but the short transition connection behind the machine. Every corrugation in the ribbed interior is somewhere lint catches, and the whole thing crushes flat if the dryer is pushed too far back — which is precisely what happens when someone slides it into place.

Gas dryers deserve one additional caution. A blocked vent on a gas dryer does not only trap moisture and lint — it traps combustion products, which means carbon monoxide. Never run a gas dryer with a disconnected or blocked duct, and make sure a working CO alarm is nearby.
