Ask which patio surface is best and you will get an answer. The answer will be wrong about half the time, because the person answering does not know whether your soil drains, whether your winters freeze, or whether the ground falls three feet across the site.

Those three things dominate. A poured concrete slab is excellent value on stable, well-drained ground in a mild climate, and a liability on clay in a hard freeze — it cannot move, so it cracks. Gravel is the cheapest surface here and drains through itself, which makes it the obvious answer on ground that holds water and a poor one on a slope, where it migrates downhill. A deck costs the most per square foot and is often the cheapest total solution on a steep site, because it sidesteps the retaining walls entirely.

This tool scores all seven against your conditions with the weights published. It will not tell you there is a best patio surface, because there isn't one. It will tell you which surfaces suit your ground, what each would cost at your square footage, and where you need to fix the ground before choosing anything at all.

Fix the water before you choose the surface

If water already pools where the patio is going, a patio will not fix it. It will become a pond with a nicer floor, and the surface you chose will be the first thing to fail.

Solve it in one of three ways. Regrade so the water runs somewhere useful, which is cheapest if you have anywhere for it to go. Intercept it with a French drain or a channel drain, which is the standard answer where water arrives from uphill. Or choose a permeable surface — gravel, or pavers with permeable joints over an open-graded base — and let it pass straight through.

The one thing you must not do is lay an impermeable surface over ground that holds water and hope. The freeze cycle will lift it, the base will stay saturated, and you will do the drainage work anyway — only this time with a patio on top of it.

Freeze–thaw is a movement problem, not a cold problem

Water expands about 9% when it freezes. In saturated soil beneath a patio, that expansion has to go somewhere, and it goes upward. This is frost heave, and it is why the same materials behave completely differently in Minneapolis and in Phoenix.

The materials that survive it are the ones that can move without breaking. Dry-laid pavers, brick, flagstone and gravel are all made of many small pieces with joints between them — the ground moves, the pieces move with it, and in spring everything settles back. A concrete slab is one piece: when the ground under part of it lifts, it cracks.

That is the entire reason this tool ranks flexible surfaces above monolithic ones in freezing climates. It is not a preference. It is the failure mode.

What each surface actually costs

DIY figures are materials and consumables, assuming you do the labour. Installed figures include labour at 2026 US national averages. The gap between them is the labour share, and it is largest for the surfaces where the work is hardest — which is also where DIY goes wrong most often.

The base is what fails, not the surface

Almost every premature patio failure is a base failure. The pavers did not sink; the base under them was too shallow, insufficiently compacted, or laid on soft subgrade without a separation fabric. The flagstone did not crack; the ground beneath it moved.

This has a useful implication when you are choosing. The difference in installed cost between a good base and an inadequate one is a few hundred dollars on a typical patio. The difference between pavers and flagstone is several thousand. If money is tight, the right economy is a cheaper surface over a proper base — never an expensive surface over a thin one.

Each of these costs money or a whole weekend to undo.

Choosing the surface before solving the drainage

Water is the first question, not the last. A patio over ground that holds water fails whatever it is made of, and retrofitting drainage underneath means removing what you built.

Pouring a slab on clay in a hard-freeze climate

A slab is one rigid piece over ground that moves. It will crack. Where frost heave is real, flexible surfaces made of many small units are the correct answer.

Spending on the surface and economising on the base

Flagstone over four inches of poorly compacted base looks worse in three years than pavers over a proper one. Spend the base money first.

Gravel on a slope

Gravel migrates downhill. On anything more than a gentle fall it needs terracing or serious edge restraint, and at that point it stops being the cheap option.

Ignoring the door threshold

A new surface raises the ground level. If that brings the patio within 6 inches of siding, weep holes, or a door sill, you have created a moisture problem. Check the levels before choosing a thickness.

Safety & honest limits

  • Retaining walls above about 4 ft — often lower, depending on your jurisdiction — need engineering and a permit. On a steep site, get that answered before choosing a surface.
  • Call 811 before any excavation.
  • Keep any finished surface at least 6 inches below siding, weep holes, or the damp-proof course.
  • Check the slip rating on porcelain and smooth stone before using it anywhere that gets wet — outdoor-rated products publish one for a reason.
  • Cutting concrete, stone and porcelain produces silica dust. Cut wet and wear a properly fitted respirator.
  • Costs are estimates, not quotes. Get two or three real bids for contracted work.

What is the best patio surface?

There isn't one. Concrete pavers are the safest default because they suit almost any soil and climate, but gravel wins on poor drainage and a tight budget, a deck wins on a steep site, and porcelain wins where staining and freeze–thaw are the problems. This tool ranks all seven for your specific conditions.

What is the cheapest patio surface?

Gravel or decomposed granite, at roughly $3–7 per square foot in materials. It also drains through itself, which makes it the cheapest solution to poor drainage as well as the cheapest surface. The trade-off is that it migrates without solid edging and is hard work for chair legs and wheels.

Are pavers better than concrete for a patio?

In freezing climates or on clay soil, yes — clearly. Pavers are many small units that move with the ground and settle back; a slab is one rigid piece that cracks. On stable, well-drained ground in a mild climate, a slab is cheaper and perfectly good.

What patio surface is best for clay soil?

Something flexible and, ideally, permeable: gravel, or pavers over a properly deep and compacted base with drainage. Clay holds water and heaves, which is exactly what rigid surfaces cannot tolerate. Whatever you choose, solve where the water goes first.

What is the best patio surface for a sloped yard?

A deck, usually. It spans the slope on posts instead of fighting it with retaining walls, and it is frequently cheaper in total than regrading even though it costs more per square foot. Above about 4 ft of retaining, engineering and a permit come into it.

How long does a patio last?

Pavers 25–40 years, brick and porcelain 40+, flagstone 50+, concrete 30+ but with cracks, gravel indefinitely with occasional top-ups, and a deck 15–30 depending on material. All of those assume the base was built correctly — a bad base cuts every one of those numbers dramatically.
