The reason lawn diagnosis is hard is not a shortage of information. It is that every source presents the same twelve causes in the same flat list, and the entire difficulty is working out which one you have. A list is not a diagnosis.
Three observations do most of the discriminating. The pattern — irregular patches, distinct circles, straight strips, small spots, or evenly everywhere — separates disease from pests from mechanical damage almost on its own. The pull test tells you whether the roots are still there. And the season tells you whether you are looking at dormancy or death.
So this asks for those first, ranks the causes against them, and shows its reasoning. Every cause comes with a physical test that takes under two minutes and settles it — because the most expensive lawn mistake is treating the wrong thing confidently.
Two guardrails run regardless of what you answer. Don't fertilise a lawn that is drought-stressed or dormant: it forces growth the roots can't support and turns a recoverable problem into a dead lawn. And don't buy grub control without doing the square-foot count first: under five grubs per square foot is normal, and treating below threshold is the most commonly wasted lawn treatment there is.
The pattern tells you most
Straight lines are never biological. If the damage runs in stripes or has a rectangular overlap at the turns, something mechanical did it — almost always a spreader, sometimes a mower. Nothing living produces a straight edge.
Distinct circles or rings point at fungal disease. Brown patch shows a smoky grey margin at the advancing edge, best seen at dawn before the dew burns off; dollar spot shows small tan spots with hourglass lesions on individual blades. Both can be nearly invisible by midday, which is why so many people miss them.
Irregular, spreading patches that lift like a loose rug are grubs — the roots have been eaten from below. Irregular patches that hold firm when you pull are more likely water: either not enough of it, or a sprinkler that doesn't reach that corner.
Small discrete spots with a suspiciously green halo around them are dog urine, and nothing else produces that combination. Damage confined to shade is a light problem no fertiliser will solve. Damage along paths and edges is compaction following where feet actually go.
Dormant is not dead
Cool-season grasses respond to drought by going dormant rather than dying. They brown off, stop growing, and wait — often for weeks — then green up when water returns. It looks alarming, and it is the single most common reason people spend money on a lawn that needed nothing but a hose.
Two tests separate them. Dormant grass has a firm crown at the base and roots that resist when you tug a handful; dead grass pulls out with no resistance at all. And a long screwdriver pushed into the soil will slide into moist ground and stop within a couple of inches in dry ground.
If it is dormancy: water deeply and infrequently — about an inch a week in one or two sessions rather than a light daily sprinkle — water in the early morning so the blades dry, raise the mowing height, and stay off it. Foot traffic on dormant turf does real damage. And do not fertilise it.
The grub count that decides everything
If the turf lifts like carpet, cut a one-square-foot flap at the edge of a damaged patch and fold it back. Count the white C-shaped larvae underneath. Fewer than five per square foot is normal in a healthy lawn and needs no action whatsoever. Ten or more, with visible damage, is a genuine infestation worth treating.
This count is the entire decision, and it is worth being blunt about why. Preventative and curative grub products are different chemistries with different application timing, targeting different life stages. Applying the wrong one, or applying either one below threshold, achieves nothing except cost and unnecessary insecticide in the soil. The count takes five minutes.
Birds, skunks or raccoons tearing at the lawn is a strong secondary sign — they are after the grubs, not the grass, and the digging damage is often worse than the feeding damage.
The things that are done to lawns rather than happening to them
A surprising share of failing lawns were damaged by their own maintenance. A dull mower blade tears rather than cuts, leaving a frayed, browning tip on every blade in the lawn and an entry point for disease — kneel down and look at the tips, the difference is obvious once you know to check. Sharpen the blade at least once a season.
Cutting too short is the other half. Removing more than a third of the blade height at once shocks the plant, and most lawns are cut a full inch shorter than they should be. Three to four inches suits most cool-season grasses far better than two: longer blades shade the soil, hold moisture, and out-compete weeds.
Overwatering causes several problems on this list simultaneously — shallow roots, extended leaf wetness for fungal disease, and in heavy soil, roots that can't breathe. One inch a week in one or two deep sessions beats daily sprinkling in every respect.

Mistakes that cause rework
Each of these costs money or a whole weekend to undo.
Fertilising a stressed lawn
The reflex when a lawn looks bad is to feed it. If the cause is drought, dormancy, disease or grubs, fertiliser makes every one of those worse — it forces top growth the roots cannot support. Diagnose first, feed later.
Applying grub control without counting
Under five per square foot is normal and needs nothing. Treating below threshold wastes money and puts insecticide in the soil for no benefit — and the wrong product for the life stage does nothing at all.
Watering a little every day
Shallow frequent watering produces shallow roots and keeps blades wet long enough for fungal disease. One inch a week in one or two deep sessions, early morning.
Dethatching a stressed lawn
Dethatching is brutal, and a lawn already under stress often doesn't recover from it. Core aerate instead, and only dethatch during active growth.
Reseeding without fixing the cause
New seed into compacted soil, deep shade, or an area a sprinkler doesn't reach will fail exactly like the grass before it. Fix the cause, then seed.
Treating for disease without identifying it
Fungicides are specific and expensive, and most lawn fungal outbreaks resolve when the conditions change. Your local extension service will usually identify a sample for free or a nominal fee.
Safety & honest limits
- Read and follow the label on any lawn product. Rates, timing, and the interval before children and pets can use the area are all specified there.
- Grub control products are insecticides. Confirm a threshold count before applying one, keep them well away from water, and observe the label's pollinator precautions — several are restricted around flowering plants.
- Never exceed the labelled rate of a fertiliser. Over-application burns turf and contributes to nutrient runoff into local waterways.
- For a suspected disease you can't identify, your local extension service is a better route than guessing at a garden centre.
