When are you being bitten?

This is the single most informative question here — it narrows which species you have, which narrows where they're breeding.

Here is the fact that reorganises this whole problem: the container-breeding mosquitoes that bite people during the day rarely travel more than about 150 metres in their entire lives. The ones ruining your evenings were, overwhelmingly, born in your yard or the one next to it.

Which means the productive work is not spraying the air they fly through. It is finding the water they hatched in. A bottle cap of water is enough. A plant saucer is a nursery. A blocked gutter is a factory. And the interval that matters is about seven to ten days, because that is how long it takes an egg to become a biting adult in warm weather — which is exactly why a weekly sweep works and a fortnightly one doesn't.

This is an inspection system, not a list of tips. Walk your yard with it open on your phone, tick what you find, and it returns a ranked priority order, the fix for each site, and a re-check interval. Everything free comes first, because most of it is free.

One honest note up front, because you will not find it on the pages selling you things: nothing here — and nothing you can buy — eliminates mosquitoes from a yard. Consistent source reduction meaningfully lowers what your property produces, and that is genuinely worth doing. Anyone promising elimination is overstating.

This is the dataset the tool runs on, published in full so it can be checked, argued with, and cited. Productivity is a 1–10 rating of how many adults a site tends to produce when it holds water. Days-to-adult are warm-weather typicals; cooler water is slower, which is why the weekly cadence has margin in it.

The pattern worth noticing: over half of these are containers you put in the yard yourself, and almost all of those are free to fix in an afternoon. The expensive-to-fix sites are a minority, and most of them are structural rather than decorative.

Source reduction versus everything else

This is the distinction the entire category blurs, and it is worth being precise about. Source reduction removes the water mosquitoes breed in, so fewer adults are produced. Larviciding kills larvae in water that can't be removed, so fewer adults emerge from that water. Adulticiding — barrier sprays, foggers — kills or repels adults that are already flying, for as long as the residue lasts.

Only the first two reduce production. The third treats the symptom, and it treats it temporarily by design: when the residue degrades, the population that is still being produced simply refills the space. That is why a yard on a spray programme with untouched breeding sites needs the programme again next season, and the season after.

None of this makes barrier treatment worthless. It has a real place — an event, a stretch of severe pressure, a property too large to sweep by hand. But it is a supplement to source reduction, not a substitute for it, and the industry pages that present it as the primary answer have an obvious reason to.

  • Free, and works: tipping containers weekly.
  • Cheap, and works where you apply it: Bti larvicide in water you genuinely cannot drain.
  • Effective but temporary, and broad-spectrum: barrier spraying.
  • Personal protection is separate again — repellent on skin and long sleeves protect you, not the yard.

Reading the biting time

When you get bitten tells you a great deal about where to look. Daytime biting points at container-breeding Aedes species — the ones that use small artificial containers and stay close to home. That is the best case, because everything they use is something you can tip out.

Dusk, dawn and night biting points at Culex, which prefer larger volumes of organically rich standing water: catch basins, neglected pools, ditches, forgotten buckets that have gone green. Culex travel considerably further than Aedes, which means a share of yours may genuinely be arriving from beyond your boundary — and it means your own sweep, while still worth doing, has a lower ceiling.

Being bitten across the whole day usually means more than one species and therefore more than one type of site. Work the container list and the standing-water list together rather than picking one.

The water you can't remove

Some water is meant to be there. A pond, a rain barrel, a catch basin sump, a tree cavity. For these, the appropriate tool is a larvicide — most commonly Bti, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, a naturally occurring bacterium that is specific to mosquito, blackfly and fungus-gnat larvae.

Use only a product labelled for the specific water type you are treating, at the labelled rate and interval. The label is a legal document, not a suggestion: it specifies which water the product may be used in, how much, and how often. Never mix products, and never improvise a home-made larvicide — the recipes circulating online are variously ineffective, harmful to wildlife, or both.

Before reaching for it, though, ask whether the water can move instead. Mosquito larvae need still water. A pump or fountain in a pond, an agitator in a bird bath, or fish in an ornamental pool all reduce production without any product at all — and unlike a monthly dunk, they keep working when you forget.

When the problem isn't yours

If you have done a thorough sweep for three consecutive weeks and the biting hasn't changed, the source is likely off your property. A neighbouring container, an abandoned pool, a drainage ditch, a low-lying area of public land.

Most neighbour cases are solved by a friendly conversation — people generally have no idea their unused hot tub is producing thousands of mosquitoes. For genuinely derelict properties and standing water on public land, most municipalities have a public-health route for reporting it, and they generally act, because it is a disease-vector question rather than a nuisance one.

That is also the point at which a licensed pest-control operator earns their fee. A good one identifies the species and finds sources you can't, rather than simply spraying. Ask what they are applying, why, and what it does to non-target insects — all three should get a straight answer and the product label on request.

What this tool assumes

Every number this tool produces rests on these. Change your inputs and they change with you.

  • Priority combines each site's published productivity rating with how well it matches when you're actually being bitten.
  • Days-to-adult figures are warm-weather typicals. Cooler water runs slower, which is why the weekly cadence is set with margin.
  • Container-breeding species typically travel only short distances, which is why a yard sweep works well on them and less well on longer-ranging species.
  • This ranks where to look. It does not identify species — that needs a sample and a specialist.
  • The tool assumes you'll walk the yard and tick honestly. Sites people skip are consistently the ones producing most.

Mistakes that cause rework

Each of these costs money or a whole weekend to undo.

Spraying before finding the water

A barrier treatment over an untouched breeding site is a recurring expense with a temporary result. Find and remove the water first, then decide whether you still need anything else.

Refilling the bird bath instead of scrubbing it

Eggs are laid on the sides above the waterline and hatch when the level rises. Tipping and refilling leaves them in place; scrubbing the sides removes them.

Sweeping fortnightly

Egg to biting adult takes about seven to ten days in warm weather. A weekly sweep stays ahead of it. A fortnightly one lets an entire generation through, which means you've done the work and got no benefit.

Ignoring the gutters because you can't see them

Gutters are the most-missed high-production site on a typical suburban property, precisely because inspecting them requires a ladder. Run a hose into the run and watch where the water stops moving.

Using a home-made larvicide

The recipes circulating online range from useless to actively harmful to fish, pollinators and pets. For water you can't drain, use a labelled Bti product at the labelled rate, and nothing else.

Treating the whole yard when the problem is one container

A single neglected tire or forgotten bucket can out-produce everything else on your property combined. The ranked list exists so you spend your effort where it does the most.

Safety & honest limits

  • This page separates source reduction from repellency deliberately. Source reduction lowers production and carries no chemical exposure at all; it is the first line here for that reason.
  • Any applied product must be used strictly according to its label — the approved water types, the rate, the interval, and the re-entry period are all specified there, and the label is legally binding.
  • Never apply any larvicide to water an animal drinks from unless the product label explicitly permits it.
  • Broad-spectrum barrier sprays do not distinguish mosquitoes from bees, butterflies or predatory insects. If pollinators matter to you, stay on the source-reduction side of this and treat spraying as a targeted last resort.
  • Never mix pesticide products, and never improvise a home-made preparation.
  • No approach available to a homeowner eliminates mosquitoes. Meaningful reduction is realistic; elimination is not.
  • Mosquitoes transmit disease in many regions. If your area has active public-health advisories, follow local guidance on personal protection as well as source reduction.

How long does it take a mosquito to go from egg to adult?

About seven to ten days in warm weather for common container species, slower in cool water. That interval is why weekly source reduction works and fortnightly doesn't — miss a week in summer and a full generation emerges.

How much water do mosquitoes need to breed?

A bottle cap. Container-breeding species routinely use a teaspoon in a plant saucer or the water held in a corrugated downspout. This is the single most under-appreciated fact in yard mosquito control, and it is why a visual scan for 'puddles' misses almost everything.

How far do mosquitoes travel from where they breed?

When should I call a professional?

When three consecutive weeks of thorough source reduction hasn't changed the biting, when you can't find the source, or when the property is too large to sweep by hand. Ask any operator what they apply, why, and what it does to non-target insects — and whether they inspect for and treat breeding sites, which is where the durable benefit comes from.
