    Best for

    Events, severe local pressure, properties too large to sweep by hand, or when three weeks of thorough source reduction hasn't changed anything.

    What it doesn't do

    Costs recur every season and every visit. Like any adulticide it treats the symptom: if the breeding sites are still producing, the population returns between visits.

    Safety: Ask what is being applied, at what rate, and what it does to non-target insects. A licensed operator should answer all three without hesitation and provide the product label on request. Ask them to avoid flowering plants and to keep well back from any water.

The most important column is not the cost. It is the mechanism. Source reduction and larviciding reduce how many mosquitoes are produced. Barrier spraying and trapping affect the ones already flying. Those are different products doing different jobs, and paying for the second without doing the first is how people end up paying every season for the same problem.

What you're actually buying, in each case

Source reduction costs you time and almost no money. It is the only approach that compounds — every week you do it, fewer adults emerge, and the benefit persists as long as the habit does. It also does nothing about mosquitoes arriving from beyond your boundary.

Larviciding is cheap, targeted and limited to the water you treat. It is the right answer for a pond, a catch basin sump or a rain barrel, and the wrong answer for a bucket you could simply tip out.

Barrier spraying, DIY or professional, buys you two to three weeks of reduced biting per application. It is the most reliable short-term result available and the least durable, and it is broad-spectrum — the same residue that kills mosquitoes kills bees, butterflies and predatory insects that visit the treated foliage.

Why we don't publish effectiveness percentages

You will see figures like "reduces mosquitoes by 89%" attached to homeowner products. We don't quote them, because the number depends almost entirely on the species present, the site, the application method, the weather, and what was being measured — landing counts, trap counts, or perceived biting. The same product honestly produces very different numbers across two yards.

What can be said with confidence is directional and mechanistic: source reduction lowers production; larvicide kills larvae where applied; barrier spray temporarily reduces adults in treated vegetation; a trap catches what it catches. Each option here carries a qualitative effectiveness statement and an explicit statement of limits, which is more useful than a precise number that doesn't transfer to your yard.

Questions worth asking a professional service

A good operator will answer all of these without hesitation. An operator who won't is telling you something.

  • Do you inspect for and treat breeding sites, or only spray? The durable part of the benefit comes from the former.

The sweep is free and reduces production; the spray is recurring and doesn't. Doing them in that order costs less and works better.

Comparing per-visit prices instead of per-season cost

A $75 visit sounds cheap. Eight of them across a season is $600, every season. Compare the annual figure against the alternatives.

Larviciding a low spot every month for years

Recurring treatment of a drainage problem usually costs more over three seasons than fixing the drainage once. Price both before committing to the monthly option.

Buying traps as a primary solution

They're the highest running cost here and the most equivocal evidence. As a supplement in one area, fine. As the main approach, expensive disappointment.

Not asking what's being sprayed

You are entitled to see the label of anything applied to your property. If a service won't provide it, that's the answer to a different question.
