Check your local ordinance before you build
Open-flame rules vary enormously by municipality and are frequently stricter than people assume: minimum distances from structures and property lines, maximum pit size, seasonal burn bans, and in some places outright prohibition on residential wood burning. Some HOAs prohibit it separately. A permanent pit built in the wrong place has to come out.
Ordinary concrete block can spall when heated
Moisture trapped in concrete masonry expands rapidly when heated and can cause the block to crack or spall — occasionally forcefully. Line any block pit with fire brick, and never use river rock or any water-rounded stone in or around the fire: trapped moisture in those can make them break apart under heat.
Never use accelerants
Petrol, lighter fluid and similar accelerants on a fire pit cause flare-ups that injure people every year. Use kindling and a firelighter. Have a hose or an extinguisher within reach whenever the pit is lit, and drown the ashes with water before you leave it.
Gas fire features are out of scope here
This page covers wood-burning pits only. Running a gas line to a fire feature is licensed work almost everywhere, and getting it wrong risks a leak. If you want gas, buy the burner and have a licensed gas fitter make the connection — the pit construction is the easy half.

A fire pit is a small circle of blocks. The fire-pit area is a much larger circle, and it is the one that decides whether the thing gets used. A 36-inch pit with people sitting around it needs a circle roughly 15 feet across once you allow a safe setback, the depth of the chairs, and room to walk behind them. Most people plan the 36 inches and are surprised by the 15 feet.
So this sizes the whole area, tells you how many people it genuinely seats at a comfortable spacing, and lists materials for both the pit and the ground around it. If you asked for eight seats and the circle holds six, it says so rather than quietly producing a materials list for something that doesn't work.
Before any of that, it checks clearance. Ten feet from any structure, fence or overhang is a floor rather than a permission — local ordinances vary enormously and are frequently stricter, with rules on distance, pit size, seasonal burn bans, and in some places outright prohibition on residential wood burning. HOAs impose their own limits separately. A permanent pit built in the wrong place has to come out, and that is an expensive way to learn the rule.

Sizing the circle, not the pit
The usable area is the pit diameter plus two of everything else: a 2.5 ft setback from the pit edge to the front of the seating, about 2.5 ft of chair depth, and about 2.5 ft behind the chairs so people can get to their seats without stepping over anyone.
For a 3 ft pit that gives a 18 ft circle — roughly 250 square feet of prepared ground. That number is what turns a fire pit from a weekend job into a proper project, and it's the number to know before you buy anything.
Seating capacity follows from the circumference of the seat ring at roughly 2.5 ft of arc per person. This is why a larger pit seats more people: it isn't the pit that gains capacity, it's the ring around it. If you need more seats, the honest fix is a bigger pit rather than pushing chairs closer.

Why the fire brick matters
Ordinary concrete masonry contains moisture, and heating it rapidly can cause that moisture to expand faster than it can escape. The result is spalling — the face of the block flaking off — and occasionally something more forceful than that.
Line any block pit with fire brick. It's an inexpensive material and it takes the direct heat so the structural block doesn't have to. The same reasoning rules out river rock and any water-rounded stone in or immediately around the fire: rounded stone is rounded because it's been in water, and trapped moisture in a dense stone under heat is a genuine hazard.
The other detail people miss: only glue the top course. The lower courses of a dry-stacked circular pit should be free to move slightly with heat and frost. Gluing the whole assembly makes it rigid and it cracks.
The ground under it
The seating area needs the same treatment as any other patio: geotextile fabric, four inches of compacted crushed aggregate, then the surface layer. Skip it and the chairs sink, weeds come through, and the whole area becomes a mud patch by the second season.
Gravel is the natural surface here and the cheapest — use crushed angular stone rather than pea gravel, because chair legs sink into rounded stone and it redistributes with every movement. Pavers work well and cost several times more. If you have an existing patio, siting the pit on it saves the entire ground component, provided the clearances work.
Edge it. A gravel circle without a physical edge migrates into the lawn within a season and you top it up forever.
Using it safely, every time
Never use accelerants. Petrol and lighter fluid on a fire pit cause flare-ups that injure people every year, and the injuries are severe. Kindling and a firelighter, every time.
Keep a hose or an extinguisher within reach whenever the pit is lit, and drown the ashes with water before leaving it — a fire pit stays hot enough to cause serious burns for hours after the flames are out, which is the specific hazard for children and pets.
Check the wind before lighting, use a spark screen if there is anything flammable within about 20 ft, and never leave a fire unattended. Most municipalities that permit residential burning still prohibit it in high winds or during declared burn bans, and those bans exist because embers travel much further than people expect.
- Site the pit downwind of the main seating if there's a prevailing wind.
- Keep at least 10 ft between the pit and any play area if children use the yard.
- Store firewood well away from the pit, not beside it.
- Dispose of ashes only once they're completely cold, and never in a plastic or paper container.
Step by step
The order matters more than the technique. Skipping ahead is what causes rework.
Check the ordinance and the clearances
Before anything else, find out what your municipality allows: minimum distance from structures and property lines, maximum pit size, seasonal burn bans, and whether residential wood burning is permitted at all. Check any HOA rules separately. Then measure the actual clearance at your intended location — 10 ft to any structure, fence or overhang is a floor, and nothing goes under tree branches at any distance.
Tip: Ask the local fire department rather than searching. They answer this question regularly and they'll tell you the local rule directly.
Call 811 and mark the circle
Request utility locating for the excavation, then mark out both circles with a stake and a string: the outer seating circle, and the pit itself. Live with the marks for a day. Walk the route from the house, sit in a chair on the line, and check the wind — this is the cheapest possible time to move the whole thing three feet.
Tip: Mark the circle with marking paint or flour rather than trying to visualise it. Almost everyone finds the real footprint larger than they pictured.
Excavate and lay the base
Excavate the seating area about 5 inches deep, lay geotextile fabric across the whole area, then add crushed aggregate in two lifts, compacting between each. Check the surface is flat and level — a fire-pit area is one of the few surfaces that should not be pitched, because chairs on a slope are unpleasant and the pit itself must sit dead level.
Tip: Compact more than you think you need to. Everything above this — the pit walls especially — depends on the base not settling unevenly.
Lay the first course and check level obsessively
Set the first course of wall block in a circle on the compacted base. Check level around the whole ring, then check it again across the diameter in three directions. Every subsequent course inherits any error in this one, and a pit whose top course is out of level is visible from across the yard.
Tip: Tap blocks down with a rubber mallet rather than adding material underneath. Removing a little is more accurate than adding a little.
Stack the remaining courses dry
Stack the remaining courses, offsetting the joints, checking level on each. Do not glue the lower courses — leaving them dry-stacked lets the pit move slightly with heat and frost instead of cracking. Apply masonry adhesive to the top course only, so it can't be knocked off.
Tip: Trapezoidal retaining-wall block lays in a circle without cutting. If you're using rectangular block, expect visible wedge gaps on the outside face.
Line with fire brick and add drainage fill
Set fire brick around the inside face of the pit to take the direct heat off the structural block. Then add 3–4 inches of lava rock or coarse gravel to the pit floor so rain drains through instead of standing in it. Never use river rock or any water-rounded stone in or around the fire.
Tip: A pit that holds water grows algae, freezes solid in winter, and is unpleasant to light. The drainage fill costs very little and solves all three.
Surface, edge, and test with a small fire
Add the surface layer around the pit, set the edging, and compact. Then light a small fire before a full one: check how it draws, watch which way the smoke goes from each seat, and confirm the clearances feel right in practice rather than on paper. Adjust the seating positions before you commit to anything fixed.
Tip: The smoke direction from each chair is something you can only learn by lighting it. It's worth an evening before you build permanent seating.

Mistakes that cause rework
Each of these costs money or a whole weekend to undo.
Planning the pit and not the circle
A 3 ft pit needs about a 15–18 ft circle of prepared ground once you allow setback, chairs and a walk-behind. That's the number that determines the project, and it's the one people discover after ordering materials.
No fire brick in a block pit
Ordinary concrete block can spall when heated because of trapped moisture. A fire-brick liner is cheap and takes the direct heat off the structural block.
River rock in or near the fire
Water-rounded stone holds moisture and can break apart under heat. Use lava rock or crushed angular stone for any fill in or around the pit.
Gluing every course
A rigid pit cracks as it heats and as the ground moves. Dry-stack the lower courses and glue only the top one.
Pea gravel as the seating surface
Chair legs sink into rounded stone and it redistributes with every movement. Crushed angular stone locks together and stays put.
