The schedule — mostly waiting, not working

  1. Day 1 — Strip, label and degrease

    3–5 hours

    Everything comes off before anything goes on. Labelling now saves an afternoon of puzzle-solving at reassembly, and degreasing is the step that decides whether the whole job holds.

    • Remove every door and drawer front. Number each one and its matching opening with tape inside the cabinet.
    • Bag the hinges and screws for each door with the same number.
    • Degrease every surface — fronts, backs, edges, face frames. Then degrease again. Kitchen grease is invisible and it is the number one cause of adhesion failure.

  2. Day 2 — Sand, vacuum, prime

    This is the part people compress and regret. Cabinet enamel needs a full day between coats to harden enough to sand and recoat, and recoating a soft film is what produces a gummy finish that marks forever.

Cabinet painting isn't a hard job. It's a slow one — the calendar is dominated by cure time, and rushing that is how the finish ends up soft and marking.

Painting kitchen cabinets is the best-value transformation in a house. New cabinets for an average kitchen run $8,000–20,000 installed. Painting the ones you have costs $300–600 in materials, and if the boxes are sound the result is genuinely comparable from three feet away.

It is also the project most likely to fail, and it fails in a specific and preventable way: the paint peels off in sheets within a year, usually starting at the edges of the doors around the sink and the cooker. When that happens, people blame the paint. It is almost never the paint.

It's one of two things. Either the surfaces weren't degreased properly — kitchen grease is invisible, it's on every surface, and paint will not stick through it — or the primer was wrong for the substrate. Those two steps take an afternoon between them, and every tutorial skims past both.

The primer table — read this before buying anything

Match the primer to what your cabinets are actually made of. Not to what the tutorial you watched used, and not to whatever's on the shelf end. This single decision does more for the ten-year outcome than anything else on this page.

If you're not sure what you have: open a door and look at the edge. Solid wood shows grain running through the edge. Veneer shows a thin different-coloured layer. Laminate has a hard plastic surface with a visible seam at the edge. Thermofoil looks like painted MDF but the surface is a vinyl film — check corners for lifting, which is thermofoil's characteristic failure.

Degreasing: the step behind most failures

Kitchen cabinets carry a film of aerosolised cooking oil. It is invisible, it is on every surface including the ones you'd swear are clean, and it is thickest exactly where you'd expect — above and beside the cooker, and around the handles where hands touch.

Paint will not adhere through it. Primer will not adhere through it either. And because the failure takes six to twelve months to appear, by the time it does, nobody connects it to the twenty minutes saved at the start.

Use a proper degreasing cleaner — a TSP substitute or a dedicated cabinet degreaser — not dish soap, which leaves its own surfactant residue. Do the whole job twice, wipe with clean water, and let it dry fully. Then scuff-sand, vacuum, and tack cloth. Dust under primer telegraphs through every subsequent coat.

Cure time is not dry time

Cabinet enamel is touch-dry in a few hours and fully hard in one to three weeks. Those are very different states, and the gap between them is where cabinet projects go wrong the second way.

Between coats, a full day. Recoating a film that hasn't hardened enough produces a soft, gummy finish that marks permanently the first time something is set on it. Light sand with 320 grit between coats and tack off the dust.

After the final coat, leave the fronts lying flat and untouched for at least 48 hours before rehanging. Then treat the kitchen gently for a fortnight — no scrubbing, nothing heavy leaned against a door. It feels excessive, and it is the difference between a finish that lasts and one that shows every fingerprint from week one.

  • Paint the backs first, then the fronts, so any handling marks land where they're not seen.
  • Keep the room above 60°F. Cold dramatically slows cure and can prevent it entirely.

Painting, refacing, or replacing

Painting costs $300–600 in materials and a week of calendar time, and keeps everything: boxes, doors, layout. It's the right answer when the boxes are sound and you like the door style.

Refacing — new doors and drawer fronts on the existing boxes, with veneer on the face frames — typically runs $2,000–8,000. It's the right answer when the boxes are sound but the door style is dated beyond what colour can fix, and it lets you change to a shaker or slab front without touching the layout.

Replacing runs $8,000–20,000+ installed and is the right answer when the boxes themselves have failed — water damage at the sink base, sagging shelves, broken frames — or when you're changing the layout anyway. If you're moving plumbing or appliances, new cabinets are part of that project rather than an alternative to painting.

One honest note on resale: painted cabinets in good condition present well, and a competent paint job does not read as a compromise to most buyers. A poor one very much does, which is an argument for either doing it properly or paying someone who will.

Sprayed or brushed — the decision that sets the finish

The single most visible difference between a professional cabinet job and a home one is usually not the colour or the prep. It is whether the finish was sprayed or brushed, and the gap is smaller than people assume once the right tools are involved.

Spraying with an HVLP unit gives a finish with no brush marks and no roller texture, which on a large flat door front is the whole game. It also demands masking an entire kitchen or a dedicated space to spray in, a properly fitted respirator with the correct cartridges rather than a dust mask, real ventilation, and a few practice passes on scrap to get the fluid and air settings right. Overspray travels much further than expected. Most people who regret spraying regret the masking, not the finish.

Brushing and rolling — a good synthetic brush for the profiles, a high-density foam roller for the flats, and a self-levelling enamel — gets remarkably close on shaker and slab doors, at a fraction of the setup. Raised-panel and heavily moulded doors are where brush marks become visible, because the profile catches light at a dozen angles.

The middle route is the practical one for most kitchens: spray the doors and drawer fronts outdoors or in a garage where masking is trivial, and brush the face frames in place, where they are seen edge-on and at a distance. That is how a lot of professional refinishing is actually done.

Whichever you choose, the enamel matters more than the applicator. A water-based alkyd or urethane-modified enamel levels out its own application marks as it dries and cures hard enough for a kitchen; a standard wall paint does neither, no matter how it is applied.

Living without a kitchen for eight days

The calendar length of this project is dominated by cure time rather than work, which means most of the eight days are days when the kitchen is partly unusable rather than days of effort. Planning for that is the difference between finishing and abandoning halfway.

The boxes stay in place throughout, so the interiors remain usable — you lose the doors, not the storage. What you actually lose is counter space, because doors and drawer fronts need somewhere flat to lie while they cure, and they need it for the entire week. A garage floor covered in plastic, a spare room, or a couple of folding tables all work. Stacking them is not an option, which surprises people; a door laid on a partly-cured door bonds to it.

Set up a temporary kitchen before you take anything apart: kettle, microwave, toaster and the week's plates on a table in another room. Move perishables and daily items out of the cabinets nearest the work, and expect fine dust from sanding to reach further than the plastic sheeting suggests it will.

Plan the timing around the household rather than the weather. The two rules that cannot be compressed are a full day between coats and 48 hours flat before rehanging, and both of them land on whatever days they land on. Starting on a Friday and rehanging the following Saturday is the pattern that fits most working weeks.

The reassembly day itself is short — an hour or two if you numbered everything — but handle the doors gently for a fortnight afterwards. The film keeps hardening for two to three weeks and takes fingerprints permanently during the first few days of that.

Step by step

The order matters more than the technique. Skipping ahead is what causes rework.

  1. Remove and number everything

    Take off every door and drawer front. Number each one and its matching opening with tape inside the cabinet, and bag the hinges and screws with the same number. Remove all hardware. This is fifteen minutes that saves an afternoon of trial and error at reassembly — cabinet doors are not interchangeable even when they look identical.

    Tip: Photograph each run of cabinets before you start. Hinge positions and door orientations are surprisingly easy to forget by day seven.

  2. Degrease twice

    Clean every surface — door fronts, backs, edges, face frames, and the box edges you'll see — with a degreasing cleaner. Then do it again. Wipe with clean water and let everything dry fully. This is the step that decides whether the whole job holds, and it is the one most often rushed.

    Tip: Pay particular attention above and beside the cooker, and around every handle. Those areas carry several times the grease film of the rest.

  3. Sand, vacuum, and tack

    Scuff-sand every surface to dull the sheen completely — 220 grit is right for most substrates. You are not removing the old finish, you are giving the primer something to grip. Fill any dents and old hardware holes you aren't reusing. Then vacuum thoroughly and wipe with a tack cloth.

    Tip: Any patch that still looks glossy after sanding is a patch that will peel. Go back over it — this is where laminate jobs fail.

  4. Prime with the right product

    Apply the primer matched to your substrate from the table above. One thin, even coat. Let it cure overnight rather than just dry — primers need time to develop adhesion, and recoating early undermines exactly the property you're relying on.

    Tip: Prime the backs of the doors first. By the time you flip them, you'll have found your rhythm, and the fronts get your better work.

  5. Two to three thin coats, a day apart

    Apply cabinet enamel in thin coats, sanding lightly with 320 grit and tacking off between each. Two coats for cabinets in good condition, three where the existing finish is damaged or you're going light over dark. A full day between coats is not padding — it's what the film needs to harden enough to sand and recoat.

    Tip: Thin is the operative word. A coat that looks slightly under-covered is correct; a coat that covers in one pass is too thick and will sag on the door edges.

  6. Cure flat for 48 hours

    Leave the fronts lying flat and untouched for at least two days after the final coat. Cabinet enamel is touch-dry in hours and fully hard in one to three weeks — rehanging early is why doors stick to frames and why fingerprints set permanently into the finish.

    Tip: This is the step people compress, and it's the one that decides how the kitchen looks in month six. Plan the week so you don't need the kitchen fully back before day seven.

  7. Rehang, fit hardware, and adjust

    Rehang using your numbering, fit the new handles and knobs, and then adjust every hinge. Repainted doors sit slightly differently — the added film thickness is enough to change the reveal — and almost every door needs a small adjustment to get the gaps consistent. That adjustment is what makes it look professional rather than repainted.

    Tip: Treat the finish gently for a fortnight. Full hardness takes considerably longer than it feels like it should.

Not degreasing, or using dish soap

Kitchen grease is invisible and paint will not stick through it. Dish soap leaves its own residue. Use a proper degreasing cleaner and do it twice — this is behind most cabinet-painting failures.

The wrong primer for the substrate

Laminate needs a bonding primer rated for glossy surfaces. Metal needs a rust-inhibitive one. Wood over a dark stain needs stain-blocking. A general-purpose primer on laminate is a job that peels.

Recoating before the previous coat has hardened

A full day between coats. Recoating a soft film produces a gummy finish that marks permanently and never fully hardens.

Thick coats to save time

Thick coats sag on vertical door edges, stay soft underneath, and take far longer to cure. Two thin coats beat one thick one in every respect including total elapsed time.

Rehanging after 24 hours

48 hours flat, minimum, and gentle treatment for a fortnight after that. Doors rehung early stick to the frames and take fingerprints permanently.

Painting thermofoil

The vinyl film lifts from the board and takes the paint with it. Replacement thermofoil doors are widely available and usually cost less than painting them twice.

Safety & honest limits

  • US homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint on cabinetry. Sanding releases lead dust, a serious hazard particularly to children. Test first and follow EPA lead-safe practices; contractors doing this for compensation must be EPA Lead-Safe Certified.
  • Spraying atomises paint into the air. Use a properly fitted respirator with the correct cartridges — not a dust mask — and ventilate thoroughly. Solvent-based enamels are worse than water-based in this respect.
  • Ventilate the kitchen throughout and for a day after the final coat, even with low-VOC products.
  • Oil-soaked rags can spontaneously combust. Lay them flat to dry outdoors or store them in a sealed metal container with water — never bundled in a bin.
  • Keep degreasers, primers and solvents away from children and pets, and never mix cleaning products.
