A deeper filter is usually the better buy

The advice is everywhere and it is always the same: change a one-inch filter every ninety days, a four-inch every six to twelve months, sooner with pets. It is a reasonable starting point and it is where every article stops.
The trouble is that ninety days describes a filter, not a house. The same filter in a two-person home with hard floors and no animals, and in a five-person home with two dogs, a smoker and the fan running continuously, reaches the end of its useful life months apart. One household is throwing away filters that had half their life left; the other is running a blocked filter for weeks, which is worse than it sounds.

The MERV upgrade that damages equipment
This is the part the search results consistently omit, and it matters more than the interval.
A higher MERV rating means finer media, and finer media resists airflow. In a system whose ductwork and blower were sized for it, that is fine. In a system that was not — which is most residential systems, particularly older ones with a single undersized return — it raises total external static pressure beyond what the equipment was designed for.
The consequences are not subtle. Restricted airflow across an evaporator coil in cooling mode causes the coil to ice up, which stops the system cooling and can slug liquid refrigerant back to the compressor. In heating mode, restricted airflow lets the heat exchanger run hotter than intended, and repeated overheating cracks heat exchangers. A cracked heat exchanger is both an expensive repair and a carbon monoxide risk.
So a MERV 13 filter fitted with good intentions to a system that cannot take it can turn a thirty-dollar purchase into a six-thousand-dollar repair. The right sequence is to have a technician measure static pressure first, or to fit a four-inch media cabinet where the much larger face area delivers the same filtration at a fraction of the resistance.

Why a deeper filter is almost always the better buy

- Never run the system with no filter fitted at all. Dust deposits on the evaporator coil and blower wheel, both of which are expensive to clean and reduce efficiency permanently.
