When duct cleaning genuinely is worth it

There are real cases, and they share a characteristic: something is in the ducts that should not be there, and you can see it.

Visible mould growth on the interior of ducts or on register faces. This is the EPA's clearest trigger, and the reason is straightforward — every time the fan runs, that growth is being distributed through the house. It comes with an important caveat covered below.

Vermin. Rodent or insect infestation in ductwork leaves droppings and nesting material that will not clear on its own and represents a genuine health issue.

Debris actually entering rooms. Not dust settling on furniture, which is normal and comes overwhelmingly from skin, fabric and outdoor air. Particles visibly blowing out of a register when the system starts.

Post-construction. Renovation without sealing the returns puts drywall dust through the whole system, and it is fine, abrasive and persistent. This is the one routine case where most HVAC professionals agree cleaning is money well spent.

The mould caveat that matters more than the cleaning

If there is mould in your ductwork, water is getting in. Mould does not grow on dry sheet metal.

The usual sources are a leaking or perpetually wet evaporator coil, condensation forming on uninsulated ducts running through a hot humid attic, or a roof or plumbing leak above the duct run. Occasionally it is high indoor humidity throughout the house.

Cleaning without finding and fixing the moisture means the mould comes straight back, usually within a year. Any contractor who wants to clean and spray a biocide without asking where the water is coming from is selling you a repeat purchase.

What is far more likely to be the problem
